Mission Statement

The mission of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is to critically assess and present the theories and practices of Oriental medicine, together with its traditional and modern derivations, in order that its graduates may deliver effective patient care.

Pacific College's campuses in San Diego, New York and Chicago present this body of knowledge to students in graduate and postgraduate degree programs, as well as certificate programs, and to practitioners through continuing education.

The goals of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine are:

1. To train qualified practitioners of Oriental medicine;
2. To enable graduates of its Master’s degree level programs to function as primary health care providers, to apply the principles of Oriental and natural healing, and to become an integral part of the modern health care system;
3. To provide graduates of the college’s body therapy certificate programs with the skills necessary to deliver safe and effective Oriental body therapy, to apply the principles of Oriental and natural healing, and to become an integral part of the modern health care system;
4. To inspire, through the presentation of Oriental and natural healing, a deep and lasting respect for the integrity of the human body, mind, and spirit;
5. To provide continuing education and post-graduate programs for graduates and other practitioners of Oriental medicine and body therapy;
6. To provide a supportive, educational environment conducive to personal growth and academic advancement;
7. To further the understanding of the profession of Oriental medicine and body therapy through dialogue with other members of the health care community and the public at-large;
8. To participate in state and national Oriental medicine and body therapy issues and convey the essence of professionalism to its students;
9. To provide a center for the research and modern validation of Oriental medical principles; and
10. To provide Oriental medical services to the community.

History

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine was founded in San Diego in 1986 to provide Oriental medical and body therapy education to students from around the world. Since its inception, the College has been at the forefront of educating students and working in conjunction with lawmakers and medical professionals to advance the standards of both the profession and the College’s curriculum. PCOM's San Diego campus was made a candidate for ACAOM accreditation in 1990. It was accredited in 1995, and reaccredited in 2000 and 2004.

Pacific College also has branch campuses in New York and Chicago. The New York branch was made a candidate by ACAOM in November 1993, became accredited in November 1995, and was reaccredited in 2001 and 2004. The Chicago branch was accredited in May 2001 and reaccredited in May 2004.

Programs Offered

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine offers acupuncture and traditional Oriental medicine programs at its various branches. The purpose of the Master's programs in acupuncture and traditional Oriental medicine is to train practitioners of Oriental medicine and to enable them to function as primary, independent health care providers. The program enables graduates to apply the principles of Oriental medicine; to take any California, Illinois, and New York state licensure exam and the national certification examinations; and to become an integral part of the modern health care system as a primary, independent health care providers.

In addition, PCOM's San Diego campus recently received approval to begin offering a doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine.
