The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has announced the results of its most recent Board of Commissioners election. A total of four new practitioner members have been elected, all of whom will be serving on the board for the first time.
The new board members are:
Daisy Barquist, Dipl. Ac., CH (NCCAOM). Ms. Barquist is an instructor at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture in Florida and the Tai Sophia Institute in Maryland. She earned her master's degree in acupuncture from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute, and also holds a baccalaureate degree (from Jacskonville University) and a juris doctorate (from Wake Forest University School of Law). She maintains a private practice in Maryland.
Jonathan Daniel, Dipl. Ac., CH (NCCAOM). Dr. Daniel is currently a professor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York, where he has been teaching since 1993. He earned a master's degree in traditional Chinese medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and was a board member of the Acupuncture Society of New York for 5 years. He also earned a doctor of chiropractic degree from Western States Chiropractic College, and has private practices in New York and Connecticut.
Pamela Ferguson, Dipl. ABT (NCCAOM). Ms. Ferguson is a visiting instructor at the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin in Texas; the European Shiatsu Institutes of Heidelberg, Munich and Vienna; and other schools in Berlin, Hamburg, and Zurich. A graduate of the Ohashi Institute in New York City, she has also served on the national board of the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia™ (AOBTA®) and on the NCCAOM ABT Exam Development Committee.
Therese Hahn, Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM). A privately practicing acupuncturist in Cocolalla, Idaho, Dr. Hahn has earned diplomas from the California Acupuncture Academy and the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. Hahn then earned her OMD and PhD degrees from Samra University, and took specialty training in acupuncture orthopedics at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego.

Chronic pain afflicts over 20% of the adult population. Sadly, most MDs have essentially no education in treating pain, beyond offering a few toxic medications. Then they tend to steer people with pain away from those health practitioners who are trained. This puts the acupuncture community on the front lines for addressing this epidemic.
When the body is going through a stressful event, the sympathetic system is activated. This activation will help the body with a life-threatening situation. If this state is activated for prolonged periods of time, it starts to consume energy. These traumatic events that generate stressors in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) will eventually become internalized.

One of the things that makes acupuncture so difficult to measure is that the medicine actually does contain some esoteric aspects. There have been numerous studies that demonstrate the neurochemical reasoning behind why acupuncture points stimulate the autonomic nervous system to enact change However, not all the benefits of TCM can easily be measured by randomized, controlled trials. But does that make them fundamentally and definitively untrue?
