As part of the nationwide effort to provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine's New York campus has initiated a fundraising campaign to assist Acupuncturists Without Borders to help facilitate the healing process among those affected by the hurricane.
Members of Acupuncturists Without Borders, a grassroots organization, will soon begin traveling to Houston, Texas, and nearby areas where evacuees are being housed, to provide free acupuncture treatments. The NADA style of auricular acupuncture will be used, with treatment provided in a community setting, and with each patient receiving treatment for between 30 and 60 minutes.
In addition to reaching out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, treatments will also be made available to all service workers in the area, including police, search-and-rescue volunteers, Red Cross volunteers, and medical personnel.
Throughout the month of September, PCOM's clinic, the Pacific College Acupuncture Center, will be accepting donations in support of the program. For more information on the relief efforts, or to make a donation, please contact Pacific College at (800) 729-3468.
One of the longest nerves in the body is known as the vagus nerve (VN). The VN is the 10th pair of cranial nerves that originates at the brain stem in the medulla oblongata. This nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is a part of the ANS. Research suggests ear acupuncture can activate the VN.
Migraines are unilateral, throbbing headaches, often with concurrent nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. Approximately 10% of the global population suffers from migraines, with women more than three times as likely as men to experience them. Medication remains a mainstay treatment option, making nondrug alternatives critical to safer practices. New research suggests auricular acupuncture may be one such alternative.
