Chronic pain afflicts over 20% of the adult population. Sadly, most MDs have essentially no education in treating pain, beyond offering a few toxic medications. Then they tend to steer people with pain away from those health practitioners who are trained. This puts the acupuncture community on the front lines for addressing this epidemic.
An Honor for Yo San University
Doctors, Daoshing Ni and Mao Shing Ni, brothers who founded Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Culver City, will be honored with the Leadership in Caring award or their lifework and community service.
The award will be presented by WISE & Healthy Aging, a geriatric acupuncture clinic free to seniors in the community. Grace Cheng Braun, president and CEO of the group said, "They were chosen for their commitment to education, their passion for carrying forward the wisdom and compassion that have nurtured and restored health for generations, and their genuine concern not only for the well-being of their students but for the community as a whole."
The brothers established Yo San University in 1989 with their father, Hua-Ching Ni, to promote standards of excellence in TCM and to provide care and community service.
The school's Blount Community Clinic houses the private practices of several licensed practitioners, which also acts as training center for students who are ready to graduate. The clinic offers affordable acupuncture and TCM care to residents of the Los Angeles area, providing more than 20,000 treatments each year. Yo San also provides community services at several externship sites, including Venice Family Clinic, Being Alive in West Hollywood and The Wellness Center.
Daoshing Ni, a licensed acupuncturist and Doctor of Oriental Medicine who has a PhD in Oriental Medicine and an MBA, has practiced Traditional Chinese Medicine for 30 years.
He took advanced studies in internal medicine, gynecology, and pediatrics at both Beijing and Nanjing Colleges of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. He was the youngest person to be licensed by the California Acupuncture Board.
Daoshing specializes in women's health, gynecology and reproductive medicine, and in 2009, he received the Dr. Joyce M. Vargyas Visionary Award from the American Fertility Society. Vargyas was a doctor who specialized in treating infertility for 26 years and co-founded California Fertility Partners.
Mao Shing Ni earned a Doctor of Oriental Medicine degree and a PhD in Oriental Medicine with an emphasis in nutrition before completing a postgraduate residency at Shanghai Medical University in China. In addition to teaching at the university and maintaining his private practice, he often speaks on wellness and longevity, two of his areas of expertise.
He has received the Acupuncturist of the Year award, written books on longevity, nutrition and self-healing, and translated the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine, an ancient text on health and healing. Dr. Mao is often asked for his expertise on the Dr. Oz health show.
