History
Bastyr University was founded in 1978. Its acupuncture and Oriental medicine program was named a candidate by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in November 1991. It was accredited in November 1994 and reaccredited in 1999 and 2004. Most recently, Bastyr's doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine was granted candidate status by ACAOM in 2005.
Programs Offered
Bastyr University offers degrees in naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, nutrition, herbal sciences, health psychology, and exercise science and wellness. In addition, the university offers certification in naturopathic midwifery and Chinese herbal medicine, and a doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine.
Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSA)
The three-year MSA provides the didactic and clinical training necessary for eligibility for the national acupuncture board exams and for licensing in most states.
Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM)
The MSAOM is includes all the didactic and clinical training of the MSA but also includes Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese medical language and is a three-and-a-half year program.
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Doctoral Program (DAOM)
The AOM clinical doctorate is focused on training students in cancer care and treatment with an emphasis on training in integrated clinical settings. Basic science classes focus on oncology pertaining to pathology and pharmacology. The program also includes nutrition, grand rounds and counseling courses and requires a research project.
Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CCHM)
The Chinese herbal medicine program is a postgraduate course for licensed acupuncturists. It enables students to gain skills and knowledge in the principles of Chinese herbology, including materia medica, formulations, prepared medicines, dispensary, TCM nutrition, herbal therapeutics, and clinical training at the Chinese herbal medicine teaching clinic.
