Mission Statement

The American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) is an academic institution dedicated to educating individuals for successful careers as healthcare practitioners based on the theories, principles, and clinical applications of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The school is committed to providing excellence in teaching, research, patient care, and community service based on the finest skills, latest technologies, and the highest ethical standards of healthcare delivery. 

History

The American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine obtained candidate status from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in November 1993. It was first accredited by the commission in May 1995, and was reaccredited in 1999 and 2003.

Programs Offered

The American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine offers a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine degree as authorized by the state of Texas. The program is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, which is the accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for the approval of programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.

The program curriculum is divided into seven areas of expertise, with a combined total of over 3,700 hours of didactic and clinical components. Areas of expertise include:

  • Basic theory 
  • Acupuncture, tai chi qigong
  • Herbology 
  • Tuina 
  • Western science (biomedical clinical science) 
  • General studies 
  • Clinical training

In addition, ACAOM has become the first TCM institution in the nation to have a pain management program accredited by the American Academy of Pain Management. Students who are interested in receiving additional credential may have a subspecialty in pain management by receiving additional didactic training in pain sciences and running rounds in the ACAOM Pain Management Clinic. This program is currently optional and available to ACAOM students only.
