The Acupuncture Studies Program

The Won Institute's Acupuncture Studies Program is an accredited 3-year Master's Degree in Acupuncture. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese medical theory and the ancient and modern uses of acupuncture. Western biomedical sciences are also taught to develop informed practitioners capable of communicating across medical disciplines and in integrated healthcare settings.

Rigorous academic instruction and early clinical exposure are hallmarks of the program. Students observe experienced faculty practicing many styles of acupuncture and related techniques. Instruction in two traditions of Acupuncture – Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element Acupuncture – form the foundations of our acupuncture training.

The Won Institute recognizes the intrinsic value of compassion in human interaction and in all healing endeavors. To teach compassion and awareness, meditation training is woven throughout the entire curriculum. Continuity in this practice engages the student in a process of personal exploration and professional development to enhance compassion and awareness.

Our Acupuncture Graduates

The Acupuncture Studies program has graduated 66 students since 2008. Graduates of our program have a 98% pass rate for the national board exams with 61 of our alumni licensed in Pennsylvania. Our graduates work in a variety of clinics including wellness centers, community acupuncture clinics, traditional medical clinics, and hospitals. Some graduates have even returned to the Won Institute as adjunct faculty members.

Acupuncture can provide constipation relief while maintaining a healthy pregnancy. A combination of San Jiao 6 (Zhi Gou) and Stomach 36 (Zu San Li) is excellent for treating constipation during pregnancy. San Jiao 6 is the shu-stream and fire point of the San Jiao channel. It can regulate the qi of the three jiaos, unblock the qi of the fu organs, descend counterflow fire, open the orifices, activate the collaterals to disperse stagnation, and eliminate distention to stop pain.

One of the longest nerves in the body is known as the vagus nerve (VN). The VN is the 10th pair of cranial nerves that originates at the brain stem in the medulla oblongata. Mitochondria, the cell’s “powerhouses,” generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), regulate oxidative stress, and coordinate vital cellular functions. When mitochondrial health declines, patients may experience widespread effects, from impaired muscle recovery to cognitive decline. The mitochondrial theory of aging even suggests progressive mitochondrial deterioration is a central mechanism in chronic disease and systemic frailty. Photobiomodulation (PBM), the therapeutic use of red and near-infrared light, directly targets mitochondria to restore energy metabolism.
