Mary McCabe, an acupuncturist and respected member of the Association for Professional Acupuncturists in Pennsylvania, passed away quietly on Good Friday, April 9, 2004, at Doylestown Hospital in Doylestown, PA.
Mary graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture in 1982. She embarked on an advanced study of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in Shanghai, China, and as a member of the advanced clinical program of Xiamen Hospital. She also became certified through the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association's program in Boston.
In 1982, Mary opened the Acupuncture Center in Somerville, Massachusetts, which was a model institution for practitioners throughout the United States. Concurrently Mary implemented the NADA protocol at Boston City Hospital. In 1988, she traveled to Katmandu, Nepal, as a detox specialist developing a community program for the treatment of substance abuse and public health.
Mary's skills as an acupuncturist were further acknowledged when she joined the teaching staff of the New England School of Acupuncture, soon becoming its acting clinical director and running the teaching clinic. She developed protocols, wrote manuals and developed OSHA training and safety manuals for staff and students.
Mary and her husband moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1996, shortly before the death of her father, and opened a private practice in Lahaska. As a seminal figure in the field, she gave lectures at Harvard, MIT, and Hahnemann University Hospital. She also traveled throughout the United States, evaluating acupuncture colleges as a member of the Association of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
