One of the longest nerves in the body is known as the vagus nerve (VN). The VN is the 10th pair of cranial nerves that originates at the brain stem in the medulla oblongata. This nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is a part of the ANS. Research suggests ear acupuncture can activate the VN.

- NCCAOM Professional Member Commissioners serve for a term of three years and function as agents of the NCCAOM.

The NCCAOM Board of Commissioners is a diverse body of volunteers committed to the advancement of our profession and public safety through the certification of our board-certified diplomates. The NCCAOM is inviting nominees for Professional Member positions to the board for service commencing March 2026.
The NCCAOM seeks board-certified diplomates who possess a commitment to the growth of acupuncture and herbal medicine with a specific interest in certification and credentialing to serve as practitioner members on the Board of Commissioners.
Qualifications and Necessary Expertise
- Strategic planning experience
- Understanding of NCCAOM Mission of Public Safety
- Experience in integrative medicine, government, health care and/or military practice settings
- Experience developing and advocating for health care policies
- Health care research
- Extremely strong communication skills

- Collaboration and cross-cultural communication
NCCAOM Professional Member Commissioners serve for a term of three years and function as agents of the NCCAOM with the following responsibilities:
- Serve on at least two standing committees to include monthly virtual meetings and prior review of posted exhibits and meeting preparation. The estimated time commitment of a Commissioner is 10 hours per month.
- Attending the winter, summer (virtual), fall, and special December (virtual) Board of Commissioners meetings, which will be either virtual or in-person, and will be multi-day as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and support for NCCAOM certification standards and policies.
- Participate in CEO, self, peer-to-peer, and overall board assessments.
- All board members should be able and willing to step into Board Officer positions.
New Commissioners are expected to complete a board orientation and become familiar with NCCAOM standards, policies, and procedures.
