A student stands over a patient, needle poised. They have a “perfect” prescription: a textbook combination of points harvested from a lecture slide on chronic lower back pain. But as the needle meets the skin, the student hesitates - the symptom of a quiet habit that has taken hold of our profession. We routinely say we “prescribe” points. It sounds efficient. It echoes the authority of biomedical culture and fits neatly into the insurance field. But vocabulary is never neutral; repeated long enough, it dictates behavior.

Irene Silvernail is a veteran health care provider with over 30 years of experience in nursing and holistic healing. She is Nationally Board Certified in Oriental Medicine and has a  master's degree in nursing. She has 23 years of experience in military medicine and in the complex management of chronic disease with dietary advice. She currently works in a wellness center in San Antonio, Texas with a focus on family health and Veteran health and is an adjunct faculty member at Texas Health and Science University teaching pharmacology and pathophysiology.
